I know how you feel. I’m from the Philippines but have lived, studied and worekd in Singapore, the US and now the Netherlands. I moved here for my grad studies, and never came across any of my countrymen in my university! But I made so many good friends of various nationalities so it didn’t matter. I have to agree though that one of the most effective ways to conjure up the image/atmosphere of home is through food. The way food evokes emotions and nostalgia is quite unparalleled. Unfortunately, there are no Filipino restaurants here so once in a while, I cook them myself and let my friends try it (so far, 100% satisfaction rate ). I was in Paris a couple of weeks ago and cooked a Filipino dinner for three French friends anyway, I digress Other than food, I’d say music has the ability to do the same thing too, but still, nothing compares to food as it touches on different senses. The sense of smell, sight and taste as the obvious ones, and maybe even touch too with the food’s texture and hearing when you hear the sound it makes when being cooked.
As an SLP your apps have been great in helping My stndtues with autism. I use Word Slapps for all of our thematic units. It is so easy to customize. We are using Making Sequences for a student we considered for AAC. Giving him the pictures with The appropriate language has resulted in generalizing to other situations. He has made great progress in the past 6 months. Thanks so much for your efforts.
The town of Stafford rallies again around the Hope of Honduras project to Keep Jeff’s Dream Alive. This project is building a Children’s Home in El Progreso, Honduras in memory of Jeff Braun. On Saturday, April 30, John and I are sponsoring the Sixth Annual Benefit Dinner and Goods and Services Auction at Golden Gavel Auctions in East Windsor, Stafford’s own, Pat Soucy, auctioneer. It’s not too late to get tickets for the dinner by calling 860 487-3765. There are many gift certificates, two time-shares in Newport, a sight-seeing plane ride, 100 gallons of home heating oil and much, much more. The generosity for the Stafford community has already sent over $100,000 to this project. We are looking forward to adding more and to take a Mission Trip to Honduras in the fall. If you are interested, please call the Leavitts 860 487-3765. Thank you, thank you, Stafford for your generosity.
